Throughout the "lolicon growth" in adult manga of the early 1980s, the time period was adopted in the nascent otaku culture to denote attraction to early bishōjo (cute woman) characters, and later to only youthful-looking depictions as bishōjo designs turned extra diversified. Media scholar Chizuko Naitō views lolicon as reflecting a "societal need in a broader sense" for younger ladies as intercourse symbols in Japan (which she calls a "loliconized society"). Lolicon grew to become a keyword in debates after the 1989 arrest of Tsutomu Miyazaki, a serial killer of younger women who was portrayed in media stories as an otaku (see § History).
