Tenant And Neighborhood Councils (TANC) is a member-run tenants union that aspires to become present throughout the wider Bay Area. This wiki was created to address basic questions and as a repository for procedures that are easy to forget. We'll also have more info on TANC's organizational structure shortly. Cheers!

Getting Involved in TANC

Anyone who is a tenant—a person who is not in control of their own housing situation—can participate in TANC and help build the organization.

For getting involved (or reinvolved—we always welcome people to come back when life becomes less busy) in TANC is easy. We suggest following these steps:

Attend a TANC event

Being a part of TANC usually begins with attending a meeting or event. Be sure to follow the TANC Google Calendar: baytanc.com/calendar as TANC events are posted there regularly. Feel free to drop into any listed!

You can decide what seems interesting enough to attend, but generally speaking the Assembly and the Local Chapter meetings are good places to begin.

Keep Track of TANC events

  • Our Website Calendar: baytanc.com/calendar Our calendar is the best place to keep track of meetings. Bookmark this page!
  • Our Facebook: facebook.com/baytanc Not all events are posted on Facebook, but many are. Be sure to follow and like the page.
  • Our Twitter: Twitter.com/TANCBay We sometimes post event reminders on twitter, and always have a hot take to share. Be sure to follow.

Sign Up For TANC's Email

To sign up for the TANC email, simply fill out the join form at baytanc.com/signup. All information collected is confidential and won't be given out to anyone.

Get in touch with the Onboarding or Organizing Committees

TANC has a new onboarding process to help integrate new members into our organizing. Here's how it works:

  • Step 1: Fill out the join form at baytanc.com/signup.
  • Step 2: An onboarding email will be sent to you. The email also includes our onboarding powerpoint; be sure to read it closely!
  • Step 3: If you have additional questions about TANC, simply reply to the onboarding@baytanc.com email and ask!
  • Step 4: If you have an organizing question, or want to help with organizing, email organizing@baytanc.com

Procedures

Procedures are being made on an as-needed basis.

Paying Optional Dues

We now have a tiered dues structure: Houseless/Unemployed (Free for each month); Low Income ($5.00 for each month); Average Income ($12.50 for each month); Mid-Income ($20.00 for each month); Above Average Income; ($35.00 for each month); High Income ($50.00 for each month). What dues you select is up to you, we will not ask for verification. To sign up as a dues-paying member, go to baytanc.com/signup

Reimbursements

Reimbursements are paid after the fact. They are limited to the following items: Meeting supplies (including food); meeting rent or subscriptions; printing or propaganda materials. For other reimbursements

  • Step 1: Purchase Items and save the receipt if possible
  • Step 2: Fill out the reimbursement form to request reimbursement. Be sure to upload a photo of receipt if possible.
  • Step 3: Wait 5 days for reimbursement. If you do not hear back within that time, email info@baytanc.com.

Local Chapters

  • Local chapters are formed when 5 TANC members decide to start one, and they announce it at a TANC assembly.
  • We currently have the following chapters:
    • West Oakland
    • East of Lake (includes just east of lake Merritt through East Oakland).
    • North Oakland
    • Berkeley (includes all of Berkeley for now).
    • San Francisco (includes all of SF for now).
    • Central Oakland (includes Adams Point, Downtown Oakland, Uptown Oakland).
